The National Education Policy (NEP) emphasizes revamping pharmacy education to enhance learning. In line with this, the Pharmacy Council of India has revised the Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) program with the Education Regulations 2020 (ER-2020). The new curriculum focuses on evolving the role of pharmacists from medicine dispensers to medicine experts in healthcare teams.

ER-2020 has reevaluated courses based on societal needs, healthcare expectations, and expert feedback. The curriculum retains 21 courses but reduces theory courses from 12 to 11 and increases practical courses from 9 to 10. The emphasis on practical learning is evident with an increase in practical hours from 750 to 800. Introduction of courses like 'Pharmacotherapeutics' and 'Social Pharmacy' will redefine the pharmacist's role in healthcare settings.

A Committee of 16 experienced members designed the syllabus, ensuring course objectives and outcomes align with ER-2020's philosophy. The curriculum emphasizes active learning through assignments and field visits, enhancing critical thinking and communication skills. While the curriculum is not credit-based, it is deemed equivalent to 80 credits for administrative purposes.

The new curriculum aims to equip D.Pharm students with knowledge and skills for current and future professional demands. The Council plans to conduct various training programs for faculty to effectively deliver the new courses. The Council appreciates the efforts of all stakeholders involved in this initiative.
